The History of St. Mary and St. Stephen Cemeteries

St mary Cemetery GateSt, Mary Cemetery became a reality when purchased on April 17, 1867 by the St. Mary Church congregation. The location was described "as about a mile and a half south east of town. On a good pike easy of access, and can be made one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the county".

Old St Stephen Cemetery GateThe Old St. Stephen Cemetery was purchased after a debate as to whether the German speaking Catholics should buy this piece of property in conjunction with English speaking Catholics. It was suggested and approved on December 2, 1849 to buy five acres and that the Germans buy the cemetery independently,New St Stephen Cemeteries Gate but any catholic wishing burial would be given the privilege of buying a grave even though not a member of St. Stephen parish.  On April 26, 1873 twelve acres were purchased for the New St. Stephen Cemetery.

Support for the Cemeteries

St. Mary / St. Stephen Cemeteries are operated as a nonprofit organization. The funds for continuous operation are derived from the sale of burial sites, interments, monuments and other burial products.
Operating expenses are the responsibility of the cemeteries.  Maintenance and improvements are a constant drain on finances.  To fund this we need the support of the Catholic community.
